Aimee's Soapbox!
June 2006: Jen's Soapbox!
Hello Groovy Readers! Today, June 5, it occured to me that Aimee hadn't sent me her monthly soapbox to be posted on the website. I know she's been crazy busy, so when I asked her about it, I suggested
she might want to take a month hiatus and we'd post a "See You in July!" placeholder on the site. When she took me up on the offer, I knew then and there that for Aimee to skip a Soapbox, she really had to be in the weeds!
Well, this got me thinking that maybe Aimee's need for a break was topic enough for a Soapbox of my own! So rather than just keep Aimee's groovy readers waiting another month, I will try to fill her very unfill-able soapbox shoes!
When Life Gets Overwhelming & Something's Gotta Give...
it just might be your workout (or the Soapbox!).
Aimee's done a great job driving home again and again our store's philosophy that the key to true fitness and health is balance between the many physical, psychological and emotional areas of our selves.
If it hasn't already happened to you, there WILL be a time in your life when a major stressor presents itself. It is almost always by suprise. Even if the event itself is not a total surprise, sometimes the amount of stress it generates will be. I'm talking major life issues - death, birth, marriage, divorce, moving, losing your job, starting a new job, etc. You get the idea.
When one has to endure something this huge, sometimes the stress just gets overwhelming. Now Aimee has told all of us that stress is REALLY destructive, so it's important to keep it in check as best we can. Often, exercise can be a terrific outlet. But sometimes, when we're just completely IN THE WEEDS with a major life event, trying to find the time/energy/passion/all of the above to actually get in a workout becomes a stress in and of itself!
When finding time or energy for your workout becomes part of the stress, it's time to cut yourself some slack!
Even abs-of-steel Aimee will give you a hall pass. Major life changes require a lot of energy so don't beat yourself up if you need to divert some of your workout gumption towards working through a tough time in other areas of your life.
The best part about fitness is that if you lose it, you can get it back!
The reality is that sometimes your physical fitness just ends up taking a backseat while you work through some major life issues. The good news is that when you are ready, that favorite race, that trail you love to run, your pals at the gym, they'll all still be there for you when you come back!
Coming up. . .Aimee's Soapbox Returns!!
