May 2006: Say Yes!
This month's column will be guest-written by the winner of last month's contest, my dear Groovy Readers. If you recall, I had asked you all to write to me with the
lessons you have learned from sports or life. The winner of the contest is no stranger to Runaway Success. Actually, he is no stranger to anyone, as he has run
up-n-down Route 30 in a bright red thong for the past two years at our Heart-On Run for Charity. Rob Walsh, you can now add "cunning linguist" to "cheeky devil" in your
list of qualities. Congratulations, you are the winner!
Rob's essay, like this month's column, is entitled, "Say Yes!" In it, he advises everyone to jump in when you might feel tempted to back down. I liked this philosophy very
much because it applies to so many things in life. Sign up for a new race or new race distance. Try a different pair of running shoes and not the ones you've had for the past
ten years. Change up your training routine or even your usual running loop. You get the idea.
OK, I think I will let Rob explain it himself. Below is his winning essay:
"A wise friend once exhorted me to "leap, and find your wings on the way down." Following that advice has led me t the greatest of my life's adventures. When opportunity
arises, it is natural--cripping, but natural--to think of why we cannot sieze it. I can't remodel this house myself; I'm not a carpenter/plumber/electrician! I can't apply
for that job; I don't have the education or experience! I can't take the part in that play; the theater is 100 miles away! And yet, each time I said, "Yes!" And on the way
down, I discovered skills I did not know I possessed. And the mountainous obstacles became speed bumps, easily traversed.
This does not mean you shouldn't learn, shouldn't train, shouldn't stretch. Do it! And do it now! learn about things that interest you. Develop your skills, even if you
don't have any idea where you will use them. And when opportunity knocks, think only of what you have. Don't worry about what you lack. You will find your wings on the
way down."
Good stuff, Rob! Thanks for sharing!
So, Groovy Readers, the gauntlet has been thrown down! By a man in a red thong, no less, so you have no excuses! What will you say "yes!" to today?
Coming up. . .
