January 2008: And the Nominees Are...

Happy New Year, Groovy Readers!

Last month, when I asked for new challenge suggestions to help me re-find my sports mojo, I had no idea what to expect. I only knew that my Groovy Readers wouldn’t let me down.

Here, then, are the nominees for Sports Challenge:

J.H. writes that the SheRox Women’s Triathlon in Philly would be just the ticket for me. She says that the race is a lot of fun and that doing the shorter races gets you a good workout without making you feel “beat up” at the end. J. H. has even generously offered to do some of the bike training with me for this race.

K.S. suggests I try the 24-Hour Adventure Trail Run in Virginia (www.athletic-equation.com/24HourATR@.htm). A veteran of such races, K.S. says, “there are no losers, no DNFs, no failures! Watch yourself travel farther on foot, in one day, than you’ve ever gone in your life!” He furthers challenges me to place in the top three for women. K.S. has already signed up himself, and he throws down the gauntlet for me to tackle this ultra too.

I.Y. continues the ultra theme with his suggestion of the Green Mountain Relay in Vermont (www.greenmountainrelay.com). This race is like an eastern version of the fabled Hood-to-Coast relay. Six runners take six legs of about 5 or 6 miles each. Like K.S. above, I.Y. is a veteran of many long-distance races, including marathons and Ironman-distance triathlons. I am getting the sense that you guys are trying to sway me over to the Dark Side with you!!

J.A. offered a tantalizing option: The Tough Guy challenge in England (www.toughguy.co.uk) is described on its website as the “original survival ordeal, a test of mental and physical endurance designed to take you beyond your limits on torture-rack obstacles known as The Killing Fields, following a wild terrain warm up.” I am getting the sense that some of you don’t want me to come back after my challenge. . . .

N.S. offers a similar American Gladiator-like challenge with the Ninja Warrior contest (www.g4tv.com/ninjawarrior/index.html). This contest airs on Japanese television and consists of 100 competitors attempting four obstacle courses. The women’s course focuses on the competitors’ agility and balance. Now, N.S. does suggest that if a trip to Japan is out of the question, I could try a 100-mile mountain bike race that will be held in State College this summer. He even promises to provide the bike.

A few people, including S.S. and B.P., suggested coaching as a way to regain my mojo. Both felt that influencing and making an impact on others is just what I need to rejuvenate myself. And T.K. said that shooting under 100 on an 18-hole golf course would do the trick. He did make it clear, however, that course could not have windmills, clown mouths, and/or mini-waterfalls.

So there are all the nominees for Best Cure for Lost Sports Mojo! And the winner is. . . .
